549,856. Removing and collecting soot. WHITTINGHAM, R. June 7, 1941, No. 7233. [Class 126] A device for use in cleaning the chimneys of open fireplaces, so as to collect the soot while preventing its escape into the room, comprises a loose canvas or like screen 5 attached to a frame 1 and formed with a hole 6 for the insertion of the broomsticks, and a receptacle 9 adapted to enter the grate and to be attached to, the frame, the back face 27 of which together with that 28 of a second frame 12 carring the receptacle 9, is surfaced with felt, rubber &c. to bear against the tile surround of the fireplace. The frames 1, 12 are adjustably connected together by bolts and slotted plates, and the upper edge of the frame 1 is attached to the top of the grate opening by clamping- plates 33, 34 connected to sleeves 31, 32 adjustably secured upon pins 29, 30 by screws 35, 36. The receptacle 9 has a closed forwardly-extending bag portion 10 to retain the soot. Closable openings 7, 8 serve for the insertion of the sweep's hands for manipulating the parts. An extension may be fitted to the top of the frame 1 by means of pins entering holes 41. Specifications 490,235, 490,236 and 490,279 are referred to.
