Abstract
549,854. Bread-making. HARBER, L. S., POINTON, J. E., and BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. June 4, 1941, No. 7079. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] In the manufacture of laminated bread, dough pieces are fed in parallel to a corresponding number of flattening rolls or bands to form plaques with the adjacent flattened faces disposed towards one another. In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, dough pieces are fed from hoppers 47 between ground or ribbed rollers 1 and fixed elements 2 having a concave face 3 terminating in a neck-forming blade 5 so that each piece is shaped to form two lobes connected by a neck, the lobes being unsupported except at the neck. The pieces then pass between rotary discs 6 and a common supporting tray 7 to discs 8, or knives, which sever the necks. The lobes, aided by a rotary spindle 27, are delivered to pairs of adjustable rolls 19, which form them into plaques. A second set of rolls having less nip may be arranged beneath the rolls 19. The plaques are discharged through shoots, formed by converging partitions 29, 30 into the baking tin 31. The shafts 12, 13 of the rollers 1 and discs 6 are driven from the main shaft 14 by a chain 16 and sprockets and the rolls 19 by spiral gears 21, 22 from a shaft 23 driven by a chain 25 and sprockets. A cam shaft 41 carries a cam 46 operating the two-part pivoted hoppers 47 against return springs 57, a cam 40 controlling a lever 37 for raising the inner partitions 30 of the shoot against a return spring 36 out of the tin 31 after delivery of the plaques thereto to permit the tin to be moved by a chain conveyer 32 and a cam 42 controlling a pivoted stop 43 for the tins. The partitions 30 terminate in depending fingers or wires to prevent adhesion of the dough during withdrawal of the partitions. The plaques may be collected for simultaneous delivery into the tin by means of a pair of rotatable or oscillatable flaps comprising oiling means (60, 61, Fig. 6, not shown), constructed as described in Specification 546,429. The stop 43 for the tins may be dispensed with, the time of arrival of the tins being synchronized with the operation of the flaps or an intermittently-operated conveyer being employed. In modifications, the rolls are arranged in two parallel rows, horizontal or inclined, so that the plaques from one row alternate with those from the other row and the plaques are delivered through a vertically-partitioned shoot (70, 72a, Figs. 7 and 9, not shown) to the flaps or through a further vertically movable chute with vertical, parallel partitions directly to the tin. In the machine shown in Fig. 10, a single dough piece is delivered by a shoot 74 to a conveyer surface 75 supported by a table 76 and is elongated in passing under a triangular board 77 and then fed between rotary discs 78 and fixed blades 79 to form a row of pieces connected by short necks which are gradually reduced and finally severed. Specifications 400,619, [Group VI), 420,524, and 541,757 also are referred to.
