[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A cell used to determine the characteristics of an electrolyte has two dissimilar liquid metal electrodes. Water passing through a main from 24 to 30, Fig. 2, is treated with chlorine supplied through a pipe 135 and a running sample of treated water is supplied to an electrolytic cell 9 controlling an indicator 40, and this indicator if required controls a reversible motor 31 which adjusts the flow of chlorine. The cell 9 produces an E.M.F. which is a measure of the chlorine content, and has one electrode 17 of mercury, Fig. 1, and the other 18 of a mercurysilver amalgram, and the liquid is continuously supplied through jets 21, 22 so as to keep the surface of the electrodes agitated.
