Abstract

549,311. Locating sounds. HERZMARK, N. June 14, 1941, No. 7554. [Class 118 (ii)] A sound-collecting cell for a sound-locating apparatus comprises a frusto-conical mouth 45, Fig. 12, leading into a spherical chamber 46 from which a tapering throat 47 extends to a tube 47a connected to an ear-piece. The chamber 46 is provided internally with a baffle 50 of lenticular shape and of a diameter approximately one third that of the chamber, this baffle being located in the central traverse plane of the chamber. To eliminate disturbing noises, the mouth 45 of the cell may be fitted with a deflector comprising a central funnel 52 with radical vanes 53. Two of these cells may be mounted at opposite ends of a beam which can be turned about a central axis for ascertaining the bearing of a sound source. Preferably separate apparatus is used for determining the azimuth and elevation, respectively, of the sound source. A listening post may consist of a sound-insulated cabin provided with a number of the sound-collecting cells oriented in different directions.
