Abstract

549,144. Levulose; sugar syrup. CORN PRODUCTS REFINING CO. April 1, 1941. No. 4387. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 127] Crystalline levulose is obtained by converting dextrose-containing solutions by heating with an alkaline catalyst such as oxide or hydroxide of calcium, strontium or barium, hydroxide of sodium or potassium, disodium phosphate, or an organic base such as pyridine, quinoline, or a soluble aliphatic amine, precipitating the levulose with an alkaline earth decomposing the salt and crystallizing the solution of levulose. The dextrose solution may be the solution in water of the pure substance or may be the solution obtained by the acid or enzyme conversion of starch or the mother liquors after separation of crystalline dextrose, or solutions obtained by hydrolysis of cellulose. The conversion with alkaline catalyst is carried out at 40-60‹C. for 6 to 10 hours. The solution after cooling to below 10‹C. is neutralized with alkaline earth and may be seeded with crystals of calcium levulate. The separated levulate is washed with lime water and decomposed with sulphuric acid. The mother liquor may be concentrated and crystallized to separate dextrose. The mother liquor from the crystallization of levulose may be mixed with dextrose to yield a syrup similar to invert sugar syrup. Specification 549,143 is referred to.
