Abstract
549,039. Paper tubes. SHEPHERD, G. R. (Westinghouse Electric International Co.) March 20, 1941, No. 12269/42. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXIII] A tube composed of at least two superposed layers of which at least one is porous cellulosic material is formed by coating at least one surface of at least one layer with an adhesive composed of polyvinyl alcohol, drying said coating, and, at any convenient time thereafter, wetting the coating, assembling the structure and consolidating the same under pressure. A tube of pre-coated and dried Fuller board sheet 28 is formed on a mandrel 36 with the aid of rollers 42, water being supplied by a brush 44 to the turns after the first, and bonding pressure being applied by a roller 34. Spirally wound tubes may be formed on a driven mandrel 52 on which an uncoated paper strip 62 is wound, followed by a coated strip 64 to overlap the joints of the first, the coating being wetted by a brush 66. Bonding pressure is supplied' by a roll 54. When a discontinuous coating is to be supplied, rubber rolls 78 may apply the adhesive in strips to a backing 72. Instead of applying the adhesive direct to the layers to be built up, sheets of thin strong paper may be coated on each side, dried in an oven and stored in rolls for subsequent use, being then wetted, assembled between the layers to be built up, and then subjected to pressure.
