548,965. Remote control systems. WHITE, S. Y. Feb. 28, 1941, No. 10680/42. Convention date, Feb. 29, 1940. Divided out of 548,202. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XL] Apparatus, such as an adjustable antenna, is controlled from a remote point by means of a reversible motor, the sense and extent of rotation of which is determined by means of a source of variable voltage disposed at the remote point and connected to the motor through a relay which is associated with a Wheatstone bridge disposed near the apparatus to be adjusted. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a mast aerial in which the exposed length of the antenna rod 76 is varied by moving a sleeve 79 up and down by means of a threaded rod 82 driven by an electric motor 83. The motor 83 is supplied through a Wheatstone bridge arrangement Fig. 6 in which one arm includes a lamp R7 whose resistance varies with current while another arm includes a rheostat R5 varied by a travelling nut 99 on the motor shaft. Across the bridge is a polarized relay PR with central off position controlling field coils FC, FC2 for driving the motor in opposite directions. The bridge is supplied through line 86 with a voltage which varies with the tuning through the medium of a potentiometer Rl coupled to the tuning knob 45. Thus, the motor runs until the bridge is balanced by adjustment of R5. Relay PR then opens the circuit and the antenna remains adjusted in accordance with the tuning. A modification is also described comprising two horizontal dipoles at right angles on a mast, in which adjustment of all four elements is effected simultaneously by a single motor through bevel gearing (Figs. 7-9 not shown).
