Abstract

548,609. Luminairs. HOLOPHANE, Ltd. (Holophane Co., Inc.). Sept. 23, 1941, No. 12316. [Class 75 (ii)] A luminair for an incandescent lamp bulb having its lower half silvered or fitted with a separate hemi-spherical reflector comprises a light-refracting bowl arranged to refract upwardly the low angle light immediately above the horizontal so that it reaches less remote ceiling areas. Fig. 2 shows an annular bowl 15 of pressed giass or transparent synthetic plastic supported from the socket cover 14 of the lamp bulb 12 by headed rods 16 passing through rubber sleeves 17 in holes in the lower portion 18 of the bowl which extends below the level of the upper edge of the hemispherical reflector 13. The outer surface of the upper portion 19 of the bowl may consist of a zone of a sphere having a centre slightly above the top of the bowl and may be formed with wide shallow radial flutes 21. The inner surface is formed with prisms having upwardly inclined surfaces 22a ... 22b and horizontal surfaces 27a ... 27g to cause the rays 24 from the lamp bulb to issue mainly in the directions 25, some internally reflected light issuing in directions 26. The bottom 18 of the bowl may be formed with closely spaced radial flutes 28 totally reflecting rays 29 issuing from the frosted upper part of the lamp bulb. A heat baffle 30 may be provided adjacent the lower part of the lamp bulb. Fig. 4 shows alternative construction in which the external surface of the bowl is formed with refracting prisms 42 and the internal surface with vertical prisms 43.
