Abstract

548,414. Airscrews. ROTOL AIRSCREWS, Ltd., CHARLES, H. N., and NEWPORT, H. July 15, 1940, No. 11735. [Class 114] In an airscrew in which the blades are made of comparatively soft material such as wood, the leading edges of the blades are reinforced by a mild steel or like metal backing provided with a sharp cutting edge of very hard steel. Fig. 2 shows a thin sheet steel channel 12 shaped internally to fit the edge 11 and the two faces of the blades 10 to which it is secured by recessed wood screws 13. The heads of the screws are soldered over to render them water tight, and the edges 17 of the channel also are sealed. A deposit 15 of steel is secured to the base 14 of the channel 12 by a welding process, and to this deposit is welded a strip 16 of hard steel with a sharp cutting edge. The channel may be recessed into the surface of the blade and secured thereto by solid or hollow rivets, whilst the base of the channel may be apertured to provide a key for the metal 15. Fig. 4 shows a hard steel edge 24 and backing 25 welded to a metal strip 26 inset in the leading edge of the blade. The backing 25 may be omitted. The reinforcing edge may be in short sections or in a continuous length.
