Abstract

548,070. Power steering gear for vehicles. AVELING-BARFORD, Ltd., and BRAMBLE, W. H. Feb. 16, 1942, No. 2141/41. [Class 79 (v)] Relates to hand and power steering-gear of the kind in which the engine drives the steering-shaft through reversing gearing including two friction clutches, and comprises an arrangement where the steering hand-wheel or lever operates through a spindle slidably-connectable either to the power steering- gear or to the pivot of the steering road wheels or rollers. In the construction shown the hand slidable shaft 33 having a coupling pin23A adapted to engage either clutch teeth 24B on a worm 24 for power steering, or clutch teeth 20A on a hollow shaft 20 for band steeing, the shaft 20 being the steering shaft for the front roll 1. The worm 24 is engaged by rollers 71 carried at one end of a floating lever 66 the other end of which is connected to the front steering roll 1 or other steered member, an intermediate part of the lever being coupled by trunnions 77 and a fork 78 to a sliding bar 65 controlling power reversing mechanism for steering the roll in either direction. The bar 65 is adjustably connected by screws 63, 64 to clutch forks 59, 60 of friction clutch members splined on a shaft 42 constantly driven from the engine, the driven clutch members, 41 45 being fixed respectively to a pinion 40 and a chain sprocket 44 whereby a shaft or sleeve 20 can be driven in either direction. The sleeve 20 is connected by an Oldham's coupling 19 to a shaft 16 driving the steering pivot of the foll 1 through worm gear 15, 13 and a pinion 12 meshing with a gear segment 6 on the steering pivot. Thus, when the handwheel shaft is rotated the worm 24 rocks the lever 66 about its pivot 72 connected to the front roll and moves the bar 65 to the right (say) so that the clutch 45, 56 is engaged and the shaft 42 drives the sleeve 20 through the chain gear 44, 39 and steers the front roll in the desired direction. This movement of the roll causes the lever pivot 72 to move to the right and the lever 66 is rocked about the rollers 71 as pivots so that the clutch 45, 56 is disengaged as soon as the roll has taken up a position corresponding to that of the steering hand-wheel. The steering movements of the front roll are transmitted to the lever pivot 72 by an arm 8, link 94, lever 93, 89 mounted on a vertical pivot 91, and a crosshead 84 connected to the pivot 72 by a spring 82 and a link 73. When it is desired to steer by hand the steering hand-wheel is pushed in and slides the shaft 23 forwardly to couple the hand-wheel shaft to the sleeve 20. (For Figure see next page)
