Abstract

547,775. Gardening forks. MALAN, L. DE M. July 3, 1941, No. 8432. [Class 6 (ii)] A support adapted for ready attachment to and detachment from a digging fork comprises one or more struts 10 pivotally engaging the cross-bar 12 of the fork and a bearing-plate 15 attachable to the strut or struts and arranged to contact with the ground surface behind the fork when the tines 13 are thrust into the ground, the support thus providing a fulcrum for the lever constituted by the handle and tines of the fork. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, two struts 10 having eyes 11 by which they are threaded on to the cross-bar 12 are employed, and are connected near their lower ends by the plate 15 and at a higher point by a bar 17 which forms a stop determining the minimum angle between the struts and tines. Such a fork is suitable for digging ridged crops e.g. potatoes, but, if the fork is also to be used for digging crops in unridged soil, e.g. carrots, each of the struts may be formed in two separable parts 10A, 10B, Fig. 5, and the cross-bar 17 attached to the shortened struts 10A for the latter purpose.
