Abstract

547,731. Grinding. BRYANT CHUCKING GRINDER CO. Oct. 29, 1940, No. 15832. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1939. [Class 60] Two or more grinding-tools are mounted on a carrier which is traversed parallel to the axis of the work and can be rocked laterally to present the selected tool to the work, each tool being provided with lateral-feed means. In the machine shown in Figs. 3 and 5, rough or finish grinding-wheels 20, 21 are mounted on an arm 25 on a bar 26 which can rock and move axially in bearings. A motor 30 on the arm drives a pulley 37 which is connected by a belt 36 to pulleys 40, 38 on the grinding-wheel shafts 22, 23. The work-piece 14 is mounted on a holder secured to a driving-spindle and provided with a mandrel having clamped thereon a sleeve provided with a spline for engaging a groove in the work. On removal of the clamp, the work-piece can be turned end-to-end to present one or other of two internal surfaces of different inclination to the appropriate grinding-wheel. When the grinding- wheel 20 is operative, the arm 25 is in forward position, this being determined by means of a track 91 on the framework, and a co-operating roller 90 on a slide 93 which is mounted in a bracket 45 on the arm and can be raised by means of a lever 95. During grinding, the arm is moved axially to feed the grinding- wheel by co-operation of a cam-part of a plate 60 on the arm with a roller 61 on a shaft 62 which is axially adjustable by means of a screw operated by a hand-wheel 65. To render operative the grinding-wheel 21, the roller 90 is raised, the arm 25 is swung to the rear, and the roller is then allowed to engage a track 92. Feed of the grinding-wheel is effected by cooperation of a cam-part 100, 102, Fig. 5, of a plate 64 on the arm with a roller 70 on a shaft 71 which is axially adjustable by a screw 74 geared to a hand-wheel 65, The grinding-wheel 20 or 21 can be trued by a tool 115, the contour being determined by co-operation of the roller 70 or 61 with a cam-part 101, 103 on the plate 64 or a cam-part on the plate 60 during traverse of the arm 25. The cam-parts may be separate from the plates. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also description of a trueing- tool mounting. This subject-matter, does not appear in the Specification as accepted but now forms the subject-matter of Specification 547,762.
