Abstract

547,336. Fluid-pressure-operated disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 21 1941, No. 2405. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1940. [Class 103 (i)] A disc brake comprises one or more friction discs slidably keyed to an aircraft or other wheel and arranged to be gripped between non-rotatable discs by pressure applied by an annulus piston the cylinder of which contains an inflatable tube having flat end walls engaging the piston and the cylinder base and axially extending walls that are inwardly folded so that these walls do not rub against the cylinder walls when the tube is inflated. The cylinder may be adjustable axially to compensate for wear of the discs. Cooling means for the brake is provided. In one construction, Fig. 5, discs 111, 111a, 111b splined to the wheel 110 alternate with discs 115a, 116a, 116b splined to a stationary support 112 and with the flange 116 of the support, the non-rotatable discs carrying the friction linings. The disc 115a is engaged by an annular piston 115 slidable in a cylinder 113 secured to the support 112 and containing a rubber tube 121 having flat vertical walls connected by walls that are inwardly folded at 29. The piston is recessed to receive one side wall of the tube. The walls of the tube may have reinforcing fabric embedded therein. The connection for the fluid comprises a tubular member 126 having a flanged inner end and a clamping screw 125. The cylinder 113 has a screw-threaded connection 113b with the support 112 and it can thus be adjusted axially to compensate for wear of the friction linings by turning it after loosening a locking device 134. If when the brake is applied the flange 116 is pushed to the right, friction lining 133 thereon engages a friction plate 130 on the wheel and adds to the braking effect. The.splining means for the rotating discs comprise members 135 secured to projections 136 on the wheel and engaging notches in the discs. Spline members 137 for the stationary discs are bolted to the support 112. Release springs 119 are provided. A construction is also shown comprising a single rotating disc disposed between the piston and the flange of the stationary supports. Cooling is effected by the centrifugal action of the rotating parts, air being drawn from the interior 139 of the wheel through openings 138, 138a thence radial passages formed between segments of the friction linings, the chamber 141 and thence to the exterior.
