Abstract

1302216 Multi-disc disc brakes; friction clutches B F GOODRICH CO 7 April 1970 [7 April 1969] 16427/70 Headings F2C and F2E] A friction member for a brake or clutch comprises an annular rigid disc 44 (or 44<SP>1</SP> not shown) haying expansion slots 46 extending radially inward from the outer periphery of disc 44, Fig. 1, or expansion slots 46<SP>1</SP> extending radially outward from the inner periphery of disc (44<SP>1</SP>), and slotted openings at that periphery of the disc not having the expansion slots for transmitting or resisting the transmission of rotational torque; circumferentially spaced sector-shaped lining pads are connected to the disc and friction lining material is attached to the lining pads; the lining pads have radially extending arms for engagement with rivets disposed in the peripheral area of the disc. As shown in Fig. 2 a torque flange 24 is mounted on a boss 25 of the non-rotary axle member 23 of an aircraft wheel 10. Secured to the torque flange by bolts 28 are a torque frame 26 and a torque tube 27, the latter having axially-extending spline members 31: see also Fig. 1. Slidable on the spline members 31 are four non-rotary disc members 32 to 35 each provided with slots 36, Fig. 3 for that purpose, in which are located wear-resistant clips 58; see also Fig. 1 and the lower half of Fig. 2. Interspersed with disc members 32 to 35 are rotary disc members 38 to 40, similarly constructed and similarly splined to, in this case, key members 41 secured to wheel rim part 13 and web 17. Disc members.-Fig. 1 shows parts of both the non-rotary and rotary disc members, while Figs. 3 to 5 show non-rotary disc member 32. It consists of an annular rigid disc 44 of high heat-absorbing-capacity material such as beryllium having eleven expansion slots 46. Lining pads 47 of high grade steel (wear-resistant), are located on each side of the disc, each pad having a cylindrical plug 49 welded to it, the plugs of two opposing pads being located in opposite ends of a hole 50 in the disc 44, Fig. 5. However, a sleeve 51 of wear-resistant material such as steel preferably surrounds the plugs in the hole. A securing pin 52 (optionally serrated) is pressfitted into each pair of plugs 49. Each pad 47 has radially-extending arms 53, Fig. 3, in engagement with rivets 54, and cutaway portions 55; the outer radial edges of each pad are turned down into the adjacent expansion slot 46- see Fig. 4. Secured to each lining pad 47 by adhesive or other fastening means is a piece of friction lining material 48 preferably having a ceramic-iron composition. The rotary disc members have only nine expansion slots (on the inner periphery) and only nine lining pads on each side. Brake-actuating mechanism.-Several piston- and-cylinder assemblies 63, Fig. 1, are disposed around the brake. Each consists of a cylinder 65 Fig. 2 seated against a flange 66 at one end of a housing 64 forming part of the torque frame 26. An inwardly-directed collar 74 engages a piston 71, the piston having a portion 72 which engages the main part of the cylinder 75. In the event of loss of part of the wheel or brake members, adjacent an assembly 63, piston part 72 would engage cylinder collar 74, thus preventing loss of the piston and, consequently, of hydraulic fluid. The assembly is closed by a cap member 76 which screws into housing 64, leaving space around cylinder 65 and between itself and piston 71. Hydraulic fluid is admitted at port 70. The piston has a cavity and has an insulating member 75 projecting from it to engage an annular retractor plate 37 located between the end non-rotary disc 35 and torque frame 26; member 75 maintains the piston temperature below fluid boiling point. Brake-retractor mechanism.-Several retractor spring assemblies 79, Fig. 1, are interspersed with the assemblies 63. A spring 85, Fig. 2, in each assembly 79 acts between a flange 83 at the inner end of a cup-shaped body 80 and a wear-compensating mechanism (not shown or described) at the outer end of a rod 82 secured to retractor plate 37 by a screw 84. The force of the retractor springs must be overcome during brake actuation. The friction lining material 48 on the non- rotary disc members and the analogous material 48<SP>1</SP> on the rotary disc members may include silicon ingredients but the grain sizes in the two cases differ. Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown) depict a rotary friction member.
