Abstract
546,834. Making machinery beds and frames. MULLER, J. A. March 26, 1941, No. 4086. Convention date, Jan. 2. [Classes 38 (iii) and 83 (iii)] Boring.-A press, having a head 3, Fig. 13. and base 2 as described in Specification 546,835, is made by casting these as a single hollow unit with side windows 7, Fig. 2, and an opening 6 in the base, introducing a boring bar 9, to carry tool holders 11 ... 15 and 19, for machining the interior in a single set-up, and introducing the necessary parts of the press through said windows 7 or opening 6 or both. After machining the interior, the casting is turned through 90 degrees on the bed 16, the bar 9 is passed through the windows 7, and guiding surfaces 22 are milled at the windows. Then the casting is placed in inverted position, the ram 26 is lowered through the opening 6 into the cylinder 17, Fig. 5, and is supported by a strut 25. Packing and retaining ring segments 31 are inserted and a platen 35 is inserted through a window 7 as shown in Fig. 8 and then rotated through 90 degrees, being centred by a block 33. The ram &c. are temporarily secured by a device 23, 40, 37 and the casting uprighted as shown in Fig. 7. A base plug 48, with flats 45 like the platen, is then inserted, rotated through 90 degrees, made into a complete cylinder by bolting on segments 50, Fig. 11, and lowered into place by jacks 42. Push back cylinders 53, Fig. 13, with plungers 54, are then inserted, in collapsed condition through the windows 7 into bores 52, connected to a fluid supply, and expanded to take the weight of the platen 35 &c. so that the device 23 &c. can be removed. Supply and exhaust pipes 61, 62 and a surge valve 58 and tank 60 are then fitted to the cylinder 17. Guiding lugs are also secured to the flat faces 45 of the platen to engage the sides of the windows. In a modification the opening 6 is larger in diameter than the platen and base plug 83, Fig. 18, to permit axial insertion thereof and avoid the necessity of the flats 45. Blocks 78 are then inserted, the plug is lifted and supported by jacks resting on the platen 35 while the cylinders 53 are inserted. After uprighting and removing the strut 25 and the jacks, guideways 92, Fig. 22, are mounted to engage the pattern by screw sockets 94 and bolts 93. If the cylinder 17 has a shoulder 99 the strut 25 is not required, and in this case the device 23, 40, 37 may be replaced by a bolt passed through the hole 5 into the ram.
