Abstract
546,459. Vinyl polymerization products; acidylamino compounds. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. April 29, 1940, No. 7632. Convention date, April 28, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Craze-resistant resinous materials are prepared by interpolymerizing monomeric styrene with an amide of an acrylic or α-substituted acrylic acid having at least one hydrogen atom or an atom directly attached to the carbonyl carbon atom, and having at least one open chain aliphatic hydrocarbon radical on the nitrogen atom. Specified amides are those of α-methacrylic, α-ethylacrylic, α-propylacrylic, α-isopropylacrylic, α-amylacrylic, α-phenylacrylic, and α-cyclohexylacrylic acids. The interpolymerization may be carried out in bulk, in dispersion or in solvents. In examples, interpolymers are prepared from styrene and N-methylmethacrylamide, N-butylmethacrylamide, N-allylmethacrylic amide or N-N<SP>1</SP>- hexamethylenedimethacrylamide by heating in in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, amides of α-methylene aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having at least one hydrogen or an atom alpha to the CO carbon and at least one open chain aliphatic hydrocarbon radical on the nitrogen atom are polymerized alone or interpolymerized with any compound containing the group CH 2 =C< and having at least one of the free valencies thereof satisfied by halogen, ether oxygen, sulphide sulphur, or ester oxygen or a radical containing a multiply bonded carbon atom removed from the vinylidene carbon by not more than one chain atom. A large number of amides is specified and examples are given of the preparation of polymers from N : N- diethylacrylamide and from N-methyl-, N- butyl-, N-(2-ethylhexyl)-, N-" Lorol "-, N-octadecyl-, N-allyl-, N-(#-cyanopentyl)- and N - (# - dimethylaminoethyl) - methacrylamides, and copolymers from methyl methacrylate and N-methacrylamide, from methyl methacrylate and N-methyl-, N-butyl, N-" Lorol "-, N-(2-ethylhexyl)- and N-allyl-methacrylamides, from vinyl acetate and N-methylmethacrylamide, also from hexamethylene-dimethacrylamide and chlorobutadiene, butyl methacrylate or vinyl acetate. The polymeric substances may be employed in compositions containing organic solvents, water or organic non-solvents containing emulsifying agents, plasticizers, driers,. waxes, dyes, cellulose derivatives and natural or synthetic resins, and may be in casting compositions, as packeting materials or dye assistants, and may be moulded to glass-like products. Amides of α-methylene aliphatic carboxylic acids. Amides of methacrylic acid with methyl-, butyl-, 2-ethylhexyl-, " Lorol "-, octadecyl-, allyl-, #-dimethylaminoethyl-, w-dimethylaminohexyl-amines or with #-aminocapronitrile are prepared by adding methacrylic chloride and an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to a cooled solution of the amine in ether. Amides of acrylic acid with methyl- or diethylamine are similarly prepared. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
