Abstract
545,705. Charging batteries. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., CHILTON, A. H., and BOLTON C. J. H. Dec. 6, 1940, No. 17373. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (iv)] A thermostatic switch is supported in or on a battery so as to respond to the temperature in the electrolyte and is arranged to alter resistance in the circuit of a regulator coil, relay winding or overcharge switch to render it responsive to a lower voltage. Overcharging is thus prevented under working or atmospheric conditions which heat the battery and lower its full charge voltage. The switch is preferably enclosed in a sealed glass bulb in a perforated ebonite casing screwed into the battery top so as to depend into the electrolyte, or embedded in bitumen and clamped against the case of a cell, particularly the outlet case of an alkaline battery. The arrangements introduce a time lag in the action of the thermostat, which may cut out or short circuit part of an adjusting or swamping resistance in the circuit of a voltage regulator or relay coil.
