Abstract

520,487. Charging and discharging batteries; automatic control systems. BOSCH GES., R. Oct. 24, 1938, No. 30631. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1937. [Class 38 (iv)] Electromotive force. - A variable-speed generator 1 charging a battery 5 in a vehicle installation is provided with a cut-out 4 and has an automatic voltage regulator 2 the setting of which is adjusted by a temperature-responsive switch 3 so as to reduce the generator voltage when the temperature of the battery exceeds a predetermined value, the change-over .to lower voltage taking place at a substantially higher temperature than that at which change-over in the reverse direction occurs. In Fig 1 the regulator 2 is of the vibratory type periodically short-circuiting a resistance 7 in series with the generator shunt field 6. A main shunt winding 8 on the regulator is opposed by an auxiliary shunt winding 9 the excitation of which is controlled by contacts 15, 16 on the temperatureresponsive switch 3. The switch 3 has a bimetallic strip 13 arranged to move a snap spring 14 to the left at a temperature substantially higher than that at which it moves it to the right. The spring 14 carries the contact 15 which in the right hand low temperature position co-operates with the fixed contact 16 to energize winding 9 and raise the voltage setting of the regulator. In alternative arrangements switch 3 may influence a part of winding 8, a resistance in series with winding 8, or a shunt winding on the regulator assisting winding 8; to alter the regulator setting. The regulator may also be provided with a current coil. In Fig 2. (not shown) a resistance fitted in series with the lighting section of the load to protect it against excessive voltage is short-circuited by another pair of contacts on switch 3 when the latter is in the high temperature low voltage position.
