Abstract
545,699. Sockets. BRIGGS, J. C. Nov. 1, 1940, Nos. 15967/40 and 1365/41. [Class 83 (iii)] A fluted cutting-tool such as a drill 1 is held in a holder comprising a compressible hollow collet 2 having an internal form complementary to the drill which may be inserted through the part 6 of the holder to any required degree and clamped by screwing the part 6 into a bevelled sleeve 5 coacting with the taper sides of the collet. The collet is split and may be of rubber or soft metal or the like and may be cast in a mould lined with a piece of metal which provides a resilient outer shell 4 for the cast portion 21. The drills used are shankless and of constant section throughout their length. In a modification, Fig. 6, the collet is compressed into the housing member 11 by a nut 12 screwing over the housing member. In another modification a centre drilling tool is employed. The tool may also be combined with a countersinking-cutter the cutting- edges of which are formed on the end of the holder or on a piece which may be brazed or cemented on the end of the holder.
