Abstract
545,590. Heat transmitting media. HOUDRY PROCESS CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1941, Nos. 2142/41, [Convention date, Feb. 17, 1940], 2144/41, 2145/41 and 2146/41, [Convention dates, Sept. 27, 1940]. [Class 64 (ii)] The low-melting properties of heat-transfer salts consisting of alkali metal nitrates and nitrites are maintained by keeping constant the ratios of nitrate to nitrite ions in the mixture. This may be done by drawing off a portion of the mixture, submitting it to reduction and returning the treated portion to the system. The proportion of nitrate should be maintained between 10 per cent. and 50 per cent. The alkali content is preferably kept between 0.2 per cent. and 2 per cent., calculated as NaOH. Hydrogen, hydrocarbons, a hydrocarbon-hydrogen mixture or ammonia gas may be used for the reduction. If nitric oxide is used to neutralize the alkali it also acts to convert nitrate to nitrite. If nitrogen dioxide is used for the neutralization equal amounts of nitrate and nitrite are formed from the alkali. Nitric acid, N203, N205, mixtures of nitrogen oxides, or silica, alumina or silicaalumina gel may also be used. Reduction with hydrogen may take place in the conventional packed column which may be inclined and rotating, or in a chamber R, Fig. 2, in which the hydrogen is passed up through a removable perforated plate 31 of unglazed porcelain with a depending annular flange 32 to form a liquid seal in the annular well 30. To reduce oxidation as far as possible a low partial pressure of oxygen in the atmosphere in contact with the salt should be maintained. Usual additions such as phosphates and chromates may be made. The mixture may be used in apparatus for the control of the temperature of a catalyst or for cracking petroleum hydrocarbons. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 only, the composition may be maintained by mere addition of the quantity required. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
