Abstract

545,461. Purifying coal tar distillates. YORKSHIRE TAR DISTILLERS, Ltd., and MILNER, D. W. Sept. 18, 1940. No. 14332. [Class 2 (iii)] Unsaturated olefinic compounds are removed from coal tar distillates by treating the distillates with a phenol at normal or elevated temperature in the presence of catalysts or condensing agents, known for promoting the alkylation of phenols with olefins. As catalysts there may be employed acids such as sulphuric acid, and phosphoric acid, sulphonic acids and particularly phenol sulphonic acids. Metal such as anhydrous aluminium chloride, 'ferric chloride and zinc chloride may also be used. The preferred phenols are monohydric phenols, although polyhydric phenols 'may also be used. The phenol is mixed with from 0.1 per cent. to 10 per cent. by weight of catalyst, and the proportion of phenol is adjusted to correspond with the amount of unsaturated compounds in the coal tar distillate. In examples (1) a mixture of phenol and 95 per cent. sulphuric acid is reacted with naphtha of boiling range 135‹ C.- 155‹ C., and the re-action product fractionated to give a naphtha free from unsaturated compounds and some high boiling tar acids. (2) naphtha is refluxed with ortho-cresol containing phosphoric acid. (3) Benzol front runnings is refluxed with xylenol containing 95 per cent. sulphuric acid. (4) Naphtha is refluxed with meta cresol and 95 per cent. sulphuric acid. Specifications 460,435 and 473,438 are referred to.
