[Class 78 (i)] - In means for loading heaped materials such as coal, stones, sand or earth, comprising an inclined reciprocating shovel 10 which delivers the material to a band or other conveyer 13 or into a receptacle, the shovel has its forward end suspended from pivots 15 mounted in blocks sliding in inclined bearings 20 and its rear end supported by pivoted links 21 oscillated by mechanism giving a quick-return motion. As shown, the links 21 are connected by rods 36 to eccentrics 27 on a shaft 28 driven from a shaft 30 through elliptical wheels 29, and the swing of the shovel is cushioned by springs 22 on rods 25 pivoted to the links at 26. The shaft 30 is driven by chain gearing 32 from a main countershaft 35 driven through a cone clutch 38 and rope gearing from an electric motor 43. The clutch is disengaged by means of a hand lever 48 on a shaft 45 carrying arms 44 engaging the clutch. A supporting framework 17 for the shovel 10, conveyer 13 and driving mechanism is mounted on wheels 18 driven through separately controlled clutches 66 so that the framework can be slewed when required. Spur wheels 52 on the inner sides of the wheels are driven by pinions 53 on aligned shafts 54 connected through chain gearing 56, a shaft 58 carrying the clutches 66, chain gearing 59, reduction gear 62 and chain gearing 63 from the cone clutch 38. The gear 62 provides a forward, neutral and reverse drive. Either of the clutches 66 can be disengaged by means of clutch levers 67 having a pin-and-slot connection with a drawbar 70 sliding in guides 71, so that one or other clutch can be engaged by sliding the drawbar. The band conveyer 13 is supported 'by rollers 73 on the carriage 17 and discharges into a wagon or hopper or on to another conveyer. The conveyer 13 is driven continuously from the motor 43 through a chain 76. The shovel may be arranged to discharge on to a band or other conveyer at an angle to or parallel to the direction of movement of the material up the shovel, or may be of angled shape in plan to change the direction of movement of the material.
