Abstract
544,823. Zirconium dioxide ; electric arc heating. TITANIUM ALLOY MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 15, 1940, No. 16543. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1939. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group XI] Zirconium dioxide is produced by heating in an electric arc furnace a mixture of zirconium ore, e.g. zircon, baddeleyite &c. and carbon, e.g. as coke of high purity such as calcined petroleum coke, graphite &c., e.g. 1 part of coke to 5 of zircon may be used, forcing air to the vicinity of the arc during heating, and oxidizing the mass thus formed by exposure to the atmosphere e.g. after partial cooling and removal of un-re-acted material from the exterior of the re-action mass. The electric furnace used may comprise an asbestos-paper lined sheet-iron shell 11 on a cast iron bottom 13 on which is rammed a mixture of carbon and tar 14 to act as a hearth and to support and supply current to a hard carbon block 16 adjacent to which is a central electrode 20 vertically movable and with a central airpassage 21 along which a controlled quantity of air is forced via a hose 23. The block 16 may be substituted by zirconium cyanonitride or carbide, or the arc may extend directly from the hearth 14 to the electrode 20. After preliminary heating e.g. for 20 minutes zirconium ore and carbon are shovelled in in batches every 10 minutes until the furnace is full. The current is adjusted e.g. to 15,000 amps at 50 volts and after 32 to 36 hours air and current are shut off, the mass allowed to cool for 12 to 24 hours whereupon the shell 11 is removed the mass is cleaned as by a compressed air blast over its entire surface and transferred to an oxidizing grate. oxidation being facilitated as by blowing air thereto and agitation, the mass thereupon crumbling and falling through the grate, the product thus obtained may then be sieved to remove impurities which remain as lumps.
