Abstract

544,507. Medical capsules. SCHERER, R. P., and SCHERER, M. L., (trading as GELATIN PRODUCTS CO.). July 11, 1940, No. 11567. Convention date, July 17, 1939. [Class 81 (i)] A filled capsule is formed from two non-miscible liquids by the intermittent discharge of globules of one liquid from an orifice and the simultaneous discharge of the other liquid from a surrounding orifice to form a shell round each globule. The finished capsules 10 are of globular shape, with a core 11 of the capsulated material encased in a solidified shell 12 of gelatine. or like. The core liquid is supplied to a tube 19, with an orifice 15 at its lower end, by a pump 23 which receives it from a supply tank 24. The gelatine or other shell liquid is supplied to annular chambers 33, 31, which terminate at the lower end in an orifice 15, by a pump 28 from a tank 25. The pumps eject an accurately metered quantity of fluid during each down stroke of the pistons 36, 37 which are operated by cams 39 and arms 40. The cams are mounted on one shaft so that the proper relationship is ensured. Nuts 41 can be adjusted against the springs 38 to vary the length of the piston stroke. The orifices are arranged above a liquid 18, through which the detached capsule drops a sufficient distance to be properly cooled. The tank 24 containing the capsulated liquid is arranged in a brine bath 80 and cooling medium is circulated through a jacket on the pump 23, and a coil 83 in the brine tank. The gelatine tank 25 is placed in a water bath 26, heated by a thermostatically controlled heater 27, and a circulating medium flows through the coil 63 and the jacket of the pump 28 to keep the pump heated. When the apparatus is started, the simultaneous operation of the pumps causes the liquids to pass through the orifices 15, 16 to form a partial globe 66, Fig. 4, inside a shell 67; the combination then detaches itself from the orifices and forms the complete globe shown in Fig. 7 as it drops through the liquid 18. It is then picked up by a U-shaped bucket 56 on the conveyer 57.
