Abstract

544,159. Padding for ironing machines and mangling rolls; knitted fabrics. GOODLOE, A. M., and HARTWELL, R. L. July 25, 1940, No. 12154. [Classes 42 (ii), 74 (ii) and 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XIV] A resilient padding for ironing or smoothing presses, and mangle rolls is formed of juxtaposed layers of a knitted metallic mesh having loosely interlinked loops of springy wire, these layers being arranged on a support and provided with a facing cover. Round or strip spring wire of a non- corrodible metal or alloy may be used for making the knit mesh, and the layers are superposed on one another, if desired in staggered relation, or folded or rolled, or arranged side by side on edge, to build up the thickness of the padding. Some or all of the layers may be corrugated, grooved or fluted, as by bending the links of the wire in the mesh as shown at 17, Fig. 2, wherein the superposed' layers 10 forming the padding are supported on a base and covered by a facing cover 14.
