Abstract
543,744. Inductor alternators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and WALKER, J. H. Aug. 9, 1940, No. 12792. [Class 35] A single-core heteropolar high-frequency inductor alternator, and particularly one in which the number of stator teeth equals that of the rotor teeth multiplied by twice the number of phases, has a damping winding on the stator embracing and damping the whole main exciting flux but not appreciably damping the oscillating flux. By these means pulsations of the main flux due to armature reaction are minimized. In addition, conducting bars or wedges, arranged to close the rotor slots completely and insulated from the core and from each other, may be used to damp harmonics in the oscillating flux due to the inverse field. The Figure shows one pole of a heteropolar alternator with generating coils D and with an exciting coil A wound in two large slots in the stator B. The stator damping winding consists of copper wedges E closing the slots and short-circuited by end rings F. The damping may be improved by additional wedges or bars in stator slots such that the winding pitch of adjacent bars is an even multiple of that of the oscillating flux. The stator damping windings may or may not be insulated from the core. Specification 483,660 is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also a double-core inductor alternator in which the damping winding is a conducting ring fitted concentrically with the main fleld winding; or insulated conducting bars may be fitted in the rotor slots and connected to a conducting ring at each end of the machine. Aluminium or brass may replace copper. Specification 535,406 also is referred to.
