Abstract
542,995. Hydrocarbons. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. June 27, 1940, No. 10982. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Normal paraffin hydrocarbons are isomerized by contacting at a temperature below 400‹F. with a Friedel-Crafts' metal halide catalyst modified with an alkali metal halide. Catalysts mentioned are the double compounds of aluminium chloride with sodium chloride or bromide and of aluminium bromide with sodium or potassium chloride. The catalysts are preferably prepared by melting the two components together in the ratio of 1.1 to 2.5 mols. of aluminium chloride or equivalent per mol. of sodium chloride or equivalent ; they may be mounted on such inert carriers as silica gel, active carbon, asbestos, clay, pumice or alumina. When exhausted, the catalysts may be re-activated by treatment with a hydrogen halide, a free halogen, or an alkyl halide. As the catalysts are also suitable for alkylation with olefines, the isomerization process may be combined with one of alkylation. Examples are given of the treatment of n-butane, either saturated with water or mixed with hydrochloric acid, using sodium aluminium chloride as catalyst ; the treatment of n-pentane is also mentioned. Specifications 524,252 and 534,456 are referred to.
