Abstract

542,911. Volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and BEATTY, W. A. July 30, 1940, No. 12342. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In arrangements for limiting automatically the amplitude of the input to a receiver and also for cutting off all signals below a threshold limit, arrangements are provided for simultaneous manual adjustment of the limits. The arrangements are useful for constant amplitude transmission systems such as frequency modulation systems and pulse transmission systems including the system described in Specification 524,671 which employs pulses with two amplitude levels. The adjusting knobs may be co-axial and arranged for simultaneous and individual operation, the knobs being both freely movable or normally mutually engaged by a spring clutch. The circuit described has input terminals I, E and output terminals O, E, the transmission path being shunted by oppositely arranged diodes VI, V2. The cathode of V1 is positively biassed by potentiometer R1 to impose an upper limit on the transmitted amplitudes, the anode of V2 being similarly biassed to impose a lower limit. The controls N1, N2 of the potentiometers are simultaneously adjustable. The potentiometers may be graded to give any desired law of variation of the upper and lower limits.
