[Class 97 (i)] Each of the side members, which are of the kind formed of a metallically-reinforced bar of mouldable material such as celluloid, cellulose derivative, or synthetic resin, consists of a core 6 flattened in a plane substantially parallel to the axis of the hinge 2 while the material surrounding the core is formed with interruptions in this part so as to impart lateral flexibility to the side. The reinforcement at such part may take the form of a plate, e.g. of steel, set in a plane parallel to the axis of the hinge, or of two parallel wires in this plane, or of a single wire. A plate reinforcement may be continued rearwardly to the ear pieces as a wire 7. The interruptions may comprise notches of the same or different width, which may extend all round the bar as shown in Fig. 2, dividing it into rings 8 surrounding the flat core ; or they may be formed in the lateral surfaces only of the bar in registering positions, or with those in one surface staggered relatively to those in the other ; or they may be joined up to form a single helicoidal notch 16 as shown in Fig. 6. The notches may be of any shape in cross-section ; they may be transverse to the length of the bar, or inclined thereto, and they may extend right down to the metallic reinforcement, or stop short of it so as to leave a thin covering layer of celluloid &c. over the metal.
