542,860. Methacrylic acid esters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 29, 1940, No. 17038. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Esters of α-methacrylic acid are obtained by re-acting the corresponding esters of xhydroxyisobutyric acid with phosphorus pentoxide in the presence of a phosphate ester. The α-methacrylic esters may be separated by distilling the resulting re-action mixture. Aliphatic phosphates, e.g. tributylphosphate, cycloaliphaticphosphates, e.g. tricyclohexylphosphate and aromatic phosphates, e.g. tricresylphosphate may be used. It is desirable to conduct the re-action in the presence of a substance which inhibits the polymerization of the methacrylic ester. Examples of inhibitors are copper, copper-bronze, copper acetate, phenol, cresol, pyrogallol, hydroquinone, resorcinol, tannic acid, sulphur and selenium. In an example, ethyl-α-hydroxyisobutyrate is slowly added to a mixture of tricresylphosphate, phosphoruspentoxide and copper-bronze heated under reflux. The following esters are specified : methyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl, octadecyl, phenyl, cresyl, tolyl, benzyl, resorcinyl and naphthyl-x-methacrylates.
