Abstract

542,803. Flanging tubes. HILL, E. April 26, 1940, No. 7541. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Portable turning apparatus.-A malleable pipe particularly for connecting by a coupling nut to another pipe or to a tap or cock, or a cylinder such as a deep drawn seamless can, is formed with a folded over integral end collar by a tool comprising a screw threaded mandrel for fixing the pipe with a part extending beyond the end thereof, and a number of interchangeable rotatable forming members of which at least one is double-ended, each member being screwed on the mandrel to effect a feed movement during rotation thereof. A seamless copper or aluminium pipe may be flanged by first fixing the pipe by gripping jaws 17 to a threaded mandrel 16 on which is screwed a tool 19 having on one end a pair of tapered parts 20, the tool being rotated mechanically or by hand. The tool is then reversed and the flange made normal to the pipe by the other end of the tool which is formed with two surfaces 23 with bevelled edges 24. This tool is then removed and replaced by a tool 25, Fig. 7, having two working surfaces 27 backed off at 28 for turning down the flange on to the exterior of the pipe. Further feeding of the tool causes the surfaces 29 to flatten or otherwise shape the end surface of the pipe and collar. The other end of this tool 25 may be provided with a cutter 30 which may be used to engage the end of the pipe to clean it prior to flanging. In another form for small pipes, the pipes 34, Fig. 10, is fixed by jaws 33 in the split portion 35 of a die held in a vice. The die is threaded at 32 to engage a tool 37. The tool has a conical part 38 cut away at each side at 48 so as to form the flange 39. The tool is then replaced by a tool 43, Fig. 12, formed with a diametrical forming surface 44 to bring the flange normal with the pipe. After the tool 43 is removed the tool 37 is again applied in its reversed position so that the end provided with a complete internal annular rim 40 folds over the flange and the flat end surface 42 shapes the end. The tools may be provided with operating rollers and may be interchangeably fitted in a rotatable chuck or stock. The end of the pipe may be provided with a groove for jointing material.
