It isanother object of the invention to provide a cutting tool of the character described having novel means-for feeding the cutter to the work, as well as novel means for anchoring the tool to the work.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character described which is of very simple and sturdy construction and which may be easily handled and applied to the work.
While the invention has been specially designed for use in cutting boiler tubes it may be used for other similar purposes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate the same parts in each of the figures, the numeral l designates a tubular mandrel one end of which has the slotted tubular cage Ztherearound, said cage having the slots 3 through which the wedgeshaped gripping jaws 4 work. The outer sur faces of these jaws are toothed to securelyengage the tube to be cut. tapered faces 5 on the outside of the mandrel, said jaws having a dovetailed connection with the mandrel as shown in Figure 6. Extending axially through the mandrel there is a rod 6 and secured to one end of the rod there is a cap I on to which'the cage 2 is threaded. The other end of the mandrel is outwardly threaded as at 8. There is a cutter head 9 rotatably mounted on the mandrel and having the oppositely arranged cutters lll, Hlmounted therein and adjustably secured in position by means of the clamp bolts Illa as shown inFigure 1. The head may be rotated by the worm gear II which is keyed thereon and which is in mesh with and rotated by a worm I2 whose shaft..l3 is extended for connection with a suitable motor, not shown. The worm l2 and its shaft l3 may be housed within a suitable gear case I 311 which is bolted to a suitable housing l3b which is splined on the mandrel and which encloses the gear II, as
shown in Figure 2. Anut 14 is screwed on to the threaded end 8 of the mandrel and has a swiveling connection-with the gear case I3b whereby the head 9 and cutters I0 may be fed to the work. The nut I4 has suitable spaced sockets Mb to receive a manipulating rod 140 for turning said nut. A pair of links l5 are pivoted, at one end, to the threaded end .8 of the mandrel and between the outer ends of said links and threaded onto the outer end of the rod 6 there is a trunnion block l6 having the laterally extended trunnions l1, ll. There is an operating handle l8 whose operative end is provided with a yoke Hi. This yoke comprises side plates which embrace the block l6 and. in which the trunnions l1 have bearings. A cross-pin 20 extends transversely through the yoke,;eccentrically with respect to the trunnions l1 and the outer ends of the links l5 have bearings on the ends of said cross-pin.
In use the end of the mandrel, carrying the cage 2, is inserted into the boiler tube 2|. When so inserted the handl e l8 will be swung into par-- 'allel relation with the rod 6, as shown in Figure 4 whereby the rod 6 andcage 2 will be moved into position toholdthe jaws 6 retracted or'out of engagement with said tube 2|. The handle l8 may then be swung into right angular position relative to the rod 6 as shown in Figures 1 and 2. This will operate to exert a pull outwardly, or to the left, as shown in Figure 2, moving the cage 2 and the jaws 4 in a corresponding direction, said jaws moving upwardly and outwardly on the 'faces '5 into engagement with the tube 2| thus anchoring the tool in place. The motor may then be started causing the cutter head 9 to rotate and the cutters ill may then be fed to the work by turning the feed nut M in an appropriate direction and the overturned or riveted end 22 of the tube will be cut away to permit a removal of the tube from the supporting partition 23. The handle !8 may then be swung around to its former position as shown in Figure 4 thus moving the'rod 6 inwardly, or to the left and thus retracting the jaws 4 to permit the removal of the cutters from the tube.
As illustrated, in Figure 7, a slightly modified form of cutter head 9a is shown in which the cutters Itla are mounted for radial adjustment. The cutters I Ba are clamped against the shims 24 of the clamp bolts 25 and said cutters Illa. may be adjusted by adding or removing the shims 24 in an obvious manner. This is desirable as it may be necessary to adjust the cutters ma inwardly so as to cut out the end of the tube 2| in the opening of the partition 23 or so as to ream out and smooth said opening in the course of completing the repairs. This cutter head 9a, if used, is mounted on the mandrel i in the same manneras the cutter head 9, as shown in Fig ure 2.
It will be noted that the rod 6 is adjustable. By an appropriate turning of said rod it may be adjusted relative to the trunnion block l6 so as to, in eifect, control the efiective length of said rod. If the effective length of the rod is shortened the jaws 4 may ride further up on the diverging faces 5 so as to engage alarger tube 2| and if the eifective length of the rod 6 is lengthened, the jaws will engage a tube of smaller diameter. This adjustment may also be eifected by the adjustment or" the cap 1 and the cage 8 attached to said cap for a like purpose.
The drawings and description disclose What is now considered to be a preferred form of the invention by way of illustration only, while the broad principle of the invention will be defined bythe appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A cutting tool comprising a mandrel one end of which is shaped to enter a tube, tube engaging means on said end of the mandrel, an adjustable axial rod extended through the mandrel and connected to said tube engaging means, a lever and trunnion block on the other end of the mandrel for actuating said tube engaging means into tube engaging position or into retracted position, a cutter head rotatable on the mandrel, cutters on the head, means for rotating the cutter head and cutters and means for manually feeding the cutters to the work.
- 2. A cutting tool comprising a tubular mandrel one end of which is shaped to enter a tube, tube engaging jaws associated with said end, a rod slidable through the mandrel one end of which is operatively connected with and adapted to move said jaws into engaging relation with the tube .tive to the mandrel, means for moving the cutter member toward the pipe engaging means comprising a member havingv internal threads engageable with the mandrel, said member, supporting means and head positioned in abutting relationship whereby rotation of the member on the mandrel moves the head toward the jaws.
3. A cutting tool comprising a tubular mandrel one end of which is shaped to enter a tube, tube engaging jaws associated with said end, a rod slidable through the mandrel one end of which is operatively connected with and adapted to move said jaws into engaging relationship with the tube and the end of the mandrel, means connectingone end of the rod and mandrel and adapted to move the rod whereby the jaws are moved into engagement with. the tube, a cutting head rotatable on the mandrel, a gear connected to one end of said head, means for driving said gear, a support for said driving means slidably mounted on said mandrel, means for preventing rotation of the supporting means relative to the i mandrel, means for moving the cutter member toward the pipe engaging means comprising a member having internal threads engageable with the mandrel, said member supporting means and head being positioned in abutting relationship connecting one end of the rod and mandrel and adapted to move the rod-whereby the jaws are moved into engagement with the tube, a cutting head rotatable on the mandrel, a gear connected to one end of said head, a gear container slidable on the mandrel, a worm in said container in mesh with said gear means for preventing rotation of the gear container relative to the mandrel, means for moving the cutter head toward the pipe engaging means comprising a member having internal threads engageable with the mandrel, said member, container and head positioned in abutting relationship whereby rotation of the member on the mandrel moves the'head toward the pipe engaging means.
