Abstract

542,787. Reboring engine cylinders. BROOKSIDE ENGINEERS, Ltd., and MIDDLETON R. J. Sept. 30, 1940, No. 14718. [Class 83 (iii)] The base of a device for re-boring internal combustion cylinders in situ is provided with magnetic means for holding it to the cylinder block. An electric motor e mounted on the base drives a splined shaft f connected through gears i, k, m, n, in a slidable casing to a gear j on the boring bar d which is carried in a quill guided in a guide portion b. The feed screw h is splined in the gear n and works in a nut r driven at a speed slightly higher than that of the screw through gears o, p, to impart slow downward feed to the casing and boring bar. A clutch operated by tappet mechanism may be used to disconnect the gear m from its spindle while a brake is applied to the feed screw to obtain the quick-return movement of the boring bar. The motor e and the electromagnet coils u are connected in parallel and the circuits are completed by the contacts shown in Fig. 4 arranged so that the motor cannot be started by movement of the sliding contact spindle 18 until the spindle 17 has first been moved to complete the circuit of the electromagnets. In a modification, Fig. 5, the circuits are completed by a switch arm 21 which first bridges the contacts 11, 12 to energize the electromagnets and then bridges contacts 14, 15 to start the motor. In some cases permanent magnets which may be neutralized by pole-piece movement inter-related with the motor switch may be used instead of electromagnets. The magnetic field produced by the magnets attracts some of the cuttings to the base a and lessens the risk of damage to the engine bearings &c.
