Abstract

542,642. Esters ; synthetic resins. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and RICHTER, H. J. May 17, 1940, No. 8835. [Class 2 (iii)] Alkylidene esters of α-methylene monocarboxylic acids are made by re-acting an aldehyde with an anhydride of an α-methylene monocarboxylic acid in the presence of a condensing agent, e.g. ferric chloride or concentrated sulphuric acid. The anhydride may be of the general formula (CH 2 =CR-CO) 2 O, where R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group or a halogen atom, and the aldehyde may be of the formula R<SP>1</SP>CHO, where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, or an aryl, aralkyl or alkenyl group. When sulphuric acid is used as the condensing agent, a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. cupious chloride, is preferably added. In examples, methacrylic anhydride is condensed with acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, heptaldehyde, and acrolein. Other specified anhydrides are acrylic, α-butylacrylic, α-phenylacrylic and α-chloracrylic anhydrides. The following aldehydes also are specified : butyraldehyde, valeraldehyde, benzaldehyde, o-toluylaldehyde, phenylacetaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, and crotonaldehyde. The products can be polymerized by heat, with or without the addition of catalysts, to form clear, hard water-insoluble resins. They may also be interpolymerized with other substances, especially with compounds of the formula: where R is an organic radicle containing a carbon atom joined to a second carbon atom by more than one bond, the multibonded atom being separated from the CH 2 =C< group by not more than one chain atom. Examples of such compounds are acrylic and methacrylic esters, methacrylic nitrile, vinyl acetate, methylvinyl ketone, butadiene, chloroprene and styrene. Examples are given of the polymerization of ethylidene dimethacrylate, and of its interpolimerization with methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, and methyl acrylate, and of the interpolymerization of methylene dimethacrylate and methyl methacrylate, and of butylidene dimethacrylate and methyl methacrylate.
