Abstract
542,465. Angular bending ; twisting &c. PARNALL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and CLAYTON, A. C. April 5, 1940, No. 6193. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for bending or straightening and/or twisting polyhedral rods, tubes, or sections comprises a tailstock in which one part of the work is clamped and a head provided with separate chucks for twisting and bending and movable towards and away from the tailstock. The work may be secured in an angularly adjustable collet in a tailstock 5 and may be supported during operation by one or more steadies 6. The bending and twisting heads are carried by a saddle 7 in which is mounted mechanism operated by hand wheels 37, 47, 101, for respectively bending in horizontal and vertical planes and for twisting. The saddle is also traversed by power in relation to fixed replaceable cams so as to effect these operations by power. The saddle is traversed by a chain 8 from a shaft 10 connected by worm and spur gear 11, 12, 13, 14 and variable speed gear 15 with a motor 16. The speed gear may be adjusted by a sprocket 17 connected by chain and bevel gear to a shaft 22 operated through bevel gear by a hand wheel 26 on the saddle. Adjacent to the wheel is a recessed plate 27 cooperating with a spring- pressed plunger 29 which abuts against a finger 31 on a sleeve 32 on the spindle 33. The sleeve is fixed in position by a spring plunger. 35 and is rotated by a lever 34 so as to operate a switch to put the motor in or out or into reverse, the variation of the transmission ratio being prevented unless the switch is in the off position. In order to bend by hand the hand wheels 37, 47 are connected respectively by spur gears and sprocket gears or adjustable arms to sprockets 46, 55, Fig. 8, the sprocket being mounted in a spindle 57 connected by bevel gear 58, 59 and worm gear 62 and clutch 64 to a shaft 63 carrying a toothed quadrant gaging a rack 71, Fig. 6, on a yoke 72 operating a roller bending 88, Fig. 11, so as to bend in a vertical plane. The sprocket 46 is similary connected by a worm drive to 80 carrying a clutch 78 and a t quadrant 81 engaging a rack a yoke 83 which also engag head 88 so as to bend in a hor plane. The head 88 which is m on compound guides is formed in two parts provided with a sp guide surface 87 in which is m a spherically surfaced element 86 carrying four bending rollers 8 twisting head 89 has four rollers 95, Fig. 7, mounted in a fixed carrier 94 and four rollers 92 mounted rotary carrier 90. The carrier 90 is rotated by hand through a wheel 101 and worm gear 97, and clutch 96. When bending or twisting are to be effected by power trough the traverse of the saddle, the clutches 64, 78, 96 respectively are reversed. The clutch 64 is operated by jection 69 on a shaft 68 rotated by bevel gear 67 from a hand le and the clutch 78 is operated projection 77 on a shaft 75 rotated by a hand lever 76, whereas the clutch 96 is operated by hand 102 and connects the pinion 9 toothed quadrant 103 the sh which carries a quadrant 105 ing a rack 107, rollers carried respectively by the quadrants 70, 81 and rack 107 engage the cams fixed in the bed so as to operate the when the saddle is traversed.
