Abstract
542,320. Jointing by stamping; embossing. AMERICAN FLANGE & MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. May 31, 1940, No. 9589. Convention date, June 28, 1939. [Class 83 (iv)] A bush 5, Fig. 8 is fixed into sheet metal 1 to form the wall or end of a container by die mechanism that punches the hole in the sheet, forms the flange 3, shapes the metal at 4 to fit the octagonal or other flange 7 of the bush to prevent rotation and if desired embosses marking letters or numerals either on the sheet above the flange 7 adjacent thereto, or both. The bush together with a gasket 9 is placed in position on the support ring 89. On descent of the presshead the punch 32 which may have a fluted cutting edge, co-acts with the flanging punch 95 to punch out from the sheet, a disc, that falls through the hollow centre of the lower die parts. The sheet is gripped between the spring pressure pads 38 and 99 the flat surfaces of which may emboss raised marking on the sheet. The springs 19 are considerably stronger than the springs 103, so that the pad 99 descends carrying with it attached cams 109 with friction surfaces 115 engaging the ends 77 of slots in locking members 73 which are thereby withdrawn from beneath the punch 95 allowing the latter to descend under the control of buffer rods 116 abutting the sleeve 117 of a buffer spring 121 confined by a nut 122. The edge 46 of the pad 44 in conjunction with the punch 95 of the neck 8 of the bush effects the flanging of the opening punched in the sheet and during this stage the neck is restricted from collapsing inwards by the sides of the punch 95. The cams 109 are adjusted by shims 112a so that when the flat surface 31 of the curling and jointing die 27 contacts the punch 95 the locking members 73 have been withdrawn permitting the leading surface 26 to enter the neck 8 and lead it to the groove 25 that curls the neck over the flange. At the same time the gasket 9 is compressed to make the joint fluid tight and the recess 45 of the pad 38 co-operates with the flange 7 of the bush to form the offset 4. The bottom of the recess may be formed to emboss identification marks on the sheet. On the upstroke of the press the pad 99 acts as a stripper and limiting bolts determine the initial position of the parts. In a modification the curling and jointing die is reversible and a compressed air buffer is substituted for the spring 121 and related parts. With this construction positive initial support for the punch 95 is not necessary and the cams and locking members are not provided. Specification 454,205 is referred to.
