Abstract
541,594. Food for animals. BACHER, A., and MACMANUS, D. A. June 8, 1940, No. 10042. [Class 5 (ii)] An inorganic nitrogen salt, e.g. ammonium bicarbonate or sulphate or a mixture of the two, is mixed with a liquid or semi-liquid proteincontaining material such as distillery wash or used brewers' yeast, and the resulting paste is mixed with a pulped or comminuted carbohydrate which has been hydrolysed in the presence of a mineral acid under pressure in an autoclave. The carbohydrate may be cereal straw, potatoes, mangolds or turnips. The acid may be sulphuric. A culture of a fastgrowing micro-organism, preferably Torulopsis utilis, may be added, as may also potassium sulphate or ammonium phosphate for the purpose of favouring the growth of the organism. During mixing 'the mixture may be aerated.
