Abstract
541,482. Cable motor ploughs. DANIEL, A. April 25, 1940, No. 7441. [Classes 6 (i) and 45] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXX] The cable drum comprises a hollow wooden cylinder without axle, with metal rims which are supported by grooved wheels carried by a frame. The drum carriage 14 is arranged at one side of a field and a horizontal anchored pulley at the other side. Ploughing is effected as the ploughs are drawn towards the drum, the return movement being made at a greater speed out of contact with the soil, and by a lighter cable. The drum carriage is secured in successive positions by the engagement of projecting hooks 21 with a cable or chain 22 anchored by a chain 23. Drums 26, 27 for the heavier and lighter cables are mounted coaxially below a motor 28 which drives them through gearing 29, 30, sliding pinions 32, 33, and toothed wheels 34, 35 formed on the drums. Each drum consists of a hollow cylinder of bent wood carrying flat metal rings 37, 38 connected by bars 39. The drums are retained in position by the engagement of the rings 37, 38 with grooved wheels 41 on a common axle 42 carried by a frame 43 secured to the base 44 of the drum carriage. The carriage is mounted on three wheels 15; 16, 17, two of which, 15, 17, may be adjusted vertically simultaneously by screwed shafts 47, 49 connected by bevel gearing and a link 50. A clutch 51 permits the shaft 49 to be disengaged. Fig. 5 shows the control for the winding mechanism. A vertical tube 52 mounted adjacent to the winding drum is threaded at 53, 55, and carries a non-rotatable nut 56 which moves slowly vertically to guide the cable 19 on to the drum. The central part of the tube 52 carries a pinion 59 rotating with it but capable of relative vertical movement. Two spindles 60, 61 carrying pinions 62, 63, are rotated in opposite directions by gearing from the drum, and are selectively engaged by the pinion 59 by an automatic control, the direction of rotation of the tube 52 depending upon which pinion is engaged. A nut 70 which is prevented from turning, is engaged by the upper end of the tube, and both nuts 56, 70 move in the same direction. Assuming that both are moving upward, the spring 71 becomes compressed, the pinion 59 being held against axial movement by a detent lever 73 pivoted at 80, until the upper end of the lever is moved inward by the nut 70, when the pinion is suddenly released and moved upward by the spring 71 to engage the driving pinion 63, and is retained in that position by another detent 74. The direction of rotation of the tube 52 changes, and both nuts move downward. This continues until the nut 56 engages detent lever 77 and releases pinion 59 for another reversal. Friction of the springs on pinion 59 is prevented by rollers 76. The drum carriage is anchored while ploughing by passing the chain or cable 22 around pegs 81, preferably of T-section, driven into the ground, and carrying sheaves 82.
