Abstract
540,885. Measuring tensions in ropes. BRITISH ROPES, Ltd., and HITCHEN, H. April 3, 1940, No. 6005. [Class 106 (ii)] Means for determining the tensila stresses in moving haulage and other ropes comprise two spaced pulleys 4 and an intermediate pulley 32 carried by a bar 25 the ends of which are fixed in relation to the axis of the pulleys 4, the rope 5 passing over the pulleys as shown being deflected and so subjecting the bar to a bending movement which varies with the tension in the rope. In the form shown, a frame 1 is formed with platforms 2 on which are mounted the bearings of the pulleys 4 and with a platform 6 carrying a recording device 7. The bar 25 which is calibrated for deflection under load, is positioned in a recess below the platform 6 by means of adjusting screws 39, 37 in its ends and sides, the heads of which engage the walls of the recess. The ends of the bar bear on cylindrical bearing elements 41 which are adjustable longitudinally of the bar for calibration purposes by rotating screwed rods 42 with micrometer heads 45. A shoe 24 is attached to the centre of the bar by screws, to which are secured by bolts 29 two members 30 carrying ball-bearings for the pulley 32. The members 30 are connected at the top by a yoke with a slotted lug 34 engaging a pin 36 to limit lateral movement of the parts associated with the pulley 32. The recorder comprises a film 9 which is drawn over a roller 10 on to a take-up roller 11 driven by a belt and worm and wheel gearing through a change speed gear and unidirectional drive 16 from the spindle of one of the pulleys 4. A pivotal stylus 18 bearing on the film is operated by a spring-pressed pivoted lever 20 bearing on the head 22 of a pin passing through the shoe 24 and engaging the bar 25.
