Abstract

540,799. Dehydrating acetoritrile. PRATT, H. R. C.. and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 29, 1940, No. 7631. [Class 32] Aqueous solutions of acetonitrile are dehydrated by adding thereto an entrainer which forms a ternary azeotropic mixture with the water and acetonitrile and distilling the mixture to drive off the azeotrope in vapour. form. Entraining liquids specified comprise carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulphide, trichloro ethylene, perchloro ethylene, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethyl or propyl acetate, or a petroleum fraction of 60-80‹C. or 80-100‹C. boiling range. The azeotrope on condensation separates into two of three layers, the layers rich in entrainer being returned to the still while the aqueous layer is discarded or distilled to recover its content of entrainer.
