540,724. Parachute apparatus. BONNEFOY, P. E. L. Sept. 25, 1939, No. 26604. Convention date, Sept. 26, 1938. [Class 4] A device for retarding aircraft, persons or objects, or for assisting the starting of an aircraft, comprises a parachute attached to a flexible member wound on a drum carried by the aeroplane &c. the unfolded parachute first unwinding the flexible member from the drum and storing up energy in a flywheel or other accumulator which is then utilised to wind in the flexible member rapidly to draw the parachute towards the aircraft &c. In one form, the parachute is attached to a flat band 6 wound upon a drum 5, and as the band unwinds a flywheel 26 is speeded up through gearing 11, 12 and a clutch 14, 16. When it is desired to retard the aircraft more strongly the flywheel 26 is clutched to the drum 5 through the gearing 21, 22, counter shaft 20, reversing gear 23, 24, 25, clutch 15, 17 and the gearing 11, 12 to wind in the band 6. The flywheel 26 may be assisted by another flywheel 44 adapted to be coupled to the flywheel 26 after being speeded up by a seaparate motor.
