[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] The speed of the tool 74 in a screw-cutting machine is controlled by follow-up mechanism comprising a synchronizing valve 78 which is operated by the tool holder 75 and controls the supply of fluid from a pump 6 to a hydraulic jack 26 ; a screen valve 34 and stabilizator 35 operate as described in Specification 540,719 during forward feed of the tool slide 24 and a reverse valve 109, operating as described in Specification 540,683, reverses the motion of the work spindle 72 on the return stroke of the tool slide 24. The tool holder is slidably mounted in the slide 24 and is spring-loaded in the direction opposite to the direction of feed. A metering valve 36 is set to give a rate of feed slightly smaller than that required by the pitch of the thread and the revolutions of the work-spindle so that, when cutting begins, the tool holder is drawn forward and, through a lever 76, moves the synchronizing valve to the right to increase the supply of fluid to the jack.
