Abstract

540,524. Knitting. SCOTT AND WILLIAMS, Inc. March 14, 1941, No 3539. Convention date, March 16. 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] Relates to means for reversing the drive of a pattern-mechanism, as and when required. The invention is described in connection with a dial knitting-machine in which the needle selection for pattern effects is secured by the scanning of a pattern by electrical devices. The direction of movement of the scanner is controlled by a clutch, which is reversed periodically under control of pattern mechanism or otherwise. The knitting-machine comprises a frame A in which the needle cylinder 17. pattern cylinder 65, and the support for the fabric take-up mechanism rotate in synchronism. The frame A also carries rods 10 on which reciprocate crossheads 11 carrying two scanning devices 12 driven up and down the rods 10 by screwed shafts 14. The pattern cylinder 65 is mounted on a gear 68 which drives, through a gear train 22, the shafts 14. The gear train 22 includes spaced bevel gears 73, 74 freely rotatable in a shaft 14 and caused to rotate in opposite directions by an intermediate gear 75. A clutch 76 is slidably keyed to the shaft 14 between the gears 73 and 74. The arrangement is such that the clutch cannot be disengaged from one gear 74 until it has engaged the other gear 73. The clutchshifting fork 24 is connected to a rocking rod 28 on the other end of which is mounted a lever 34. Either end of the lever can be pulled down by a rod such as 35 connected to pattern-controlled levers 38, 39. The pattern-chain 47 is fed on by a ratchet actuated by a cam 59 on the take-up mechanism support. In a modification the pattern control is dispensed with and each crosshead is automatically reversed at the end of its traverse. Specification 505,000 is referred to.
