Abstract

540,508. Electrical precipitation apparatus. LODGE-COTTRELL, Ltd. (International Precipitation Co., Inc.). July 8, 1940, No. 11402. [Class 39 (i)] In apparatus for electrically precipitating particles suspended in a gas of the type comprising spatially separated charging and precipitating zones, the high tension electrode comprises a non- discharging section of relatively large diameter, a discharge section of relatively small diameter, and a connecting intermediate section the minimum length of which is equal to at least the diameter of the non-discharging section in a plane transverse to the direction of gas flow. As shown, the precipitator consists of a tube 10, preferably plane and connected to earth at 37 or to the positive pole of a source of high potential. The gas under treatment enters at the lower end 11 and discharges at the upper end 15. The non-discharging high tension electrode consists of a hemispherical body 25, a metal tube 28 and insulating member 18, clamped together by a metal rod 26 by which a unidirectional potential is applied to the electrode through .a lead 36. The discharging electrode 35 is in the form of a very fine short wire secured to a thick metal rod 31 attached to the bottom of the body 25. Alternatively, the member 31 may be of insulating material with a lead passing through it connecting the electrodes 35 and 28. Where a longer discharge electrode is required, this may consist of a length of fine wire supported helically or in short parallel lengths or in the form of a circle from the support 31. The insulator 18 is supported in an opening of slightly greater diameter in the upper end of the tube 10 by a rubber gasket 21 to allow adjustment for centering. Specification 516,158 is referred to.
