Abstract

540,096. Carboxylic acid chlorides. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. April 1, 1940, No. 5813. Convention date, April 15, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Chlorides of carboxylic acids of high molecular weight are made by causing phosgene to act on a carboxylic acid of high molecular weight at a temperature exceeding 100‹C. in the presence of a small proportion of a tertiary amine or a salt thereof. The carboxylic acids may belong to the aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic and mixed aliphatic-aromatic series. Acids mentioned include lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachic, oleic, chlorostearic, naphthenic and resin acids ; also naphthoic acid and aromatic carboxylic acids having in the nucleus or in a substituent an aliphatic residue of high molecular weight. Tertiary amines mentioned include the pyridine bases, quinoline, trimethylamine, triethylamine, dimethyl-cyclohexylamine, and dimethylaniline. In examples (1) Phosgene is passed into melted stearic acid at 140‹-150‹C. (2) Phosgene is passed into the hardened fatty acid of blubber. Specification 401,643 is referred to.
