Abstract
539,710. Fused compositions for electrical insulation. BOUGHTON, W. A., and MANSFIELD, W. R. March 14, 1940, No. 4793. [Classes 22 and 70] Electrical insulators &c. withstanding high temperature and humidity for domestic heating appliances &c. are made by fusing together mica, asbestos, spun glass, or slag wool &c. under heat and pressure with a bonding composition as disclosed in Specification 539,708 but with the addition of modifying substances for the boron trioxide component, e.g. 1 to 20 per cent. of hydrofluoric acid, hydrofluosilicic acid or an alkali metal or ammonium salt of one or both of these acids, with or without 1 to 20 per cent. of a compound of lead &c. and/or silicious material, e.g. silica, silicic acid, feldspar, or potassium silicate, the composition after fusing being cooled under pressure. As the compound of lead &c. may be used red lead oxide, lead nitrate, carbonate, fluoride, or silicofluoride, or an oxide of tin, arsenic, antimony or bismuth.
