Abstract

539,427. Sewing-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and KESTELL, T. A. March 6, 1940, No. 4165. [Class 112] In a boot-sole sewing- machine having a shoeentering horn, the presser foot 1 has a portion 13, Fig. 3, engaging the work between the points at which the needle 15 and awl 11 enter it and is moved transversely, when lifted, out of the way of the awl during its feeding movement. The presser bar 3, Fig. 1, may be mounted on parallel levers 5, 7, lifted and locked by a cam-operated connection 39, as described in Specification 516,539, and the transverse movement is given by means of a cam-actuated rockshaft 59 having an eccentric portion which is the inner pivot of the lever 5. The portion 29 of the presser-foot may be omitted. A guide 87 keeps the channel lip 19 out of the path of the awl. The work-engaging surface of the presserfoot is bevelled off on all sides to allow tilting of the work when desired, the form being such that the part 13 exerts more pressure on the work than the bevelled faces.
