Abstract

539,337. Soldering. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. April 12, 1940, No. 6696. Convention date, April 14, 1939. [Class 83 (iv)] In uniting by heat parts of aluminium or aluminium alloy at least one of the parts is previously coated with an aluminium silicon alloy and after assembling the parts, flux and heat are applied to effect a joint. It is stated that a part of the aluminiumsilicon alloy, largely of eutectic composition, spreads from adjacent areas towards any capillary space without disturbance of the coating at points distant from the joint. The operation may be effected in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The coating, which may be less than 0.001 inch thick and may be applied by heating and rolling &c. as to form an alloy bond with the bare metal, contains from 2 to 12 per cent of silicion. Parts of an aluminium alloy melting at 1,200‹ F. may be joined by an aluminium-silicon alloy containing about 5 to 10 per cent of silicon by heating in a furnace for about 6 to 10 minutes at 1,075‹ to 1,180‹ F.
