Abstract

539.115. Machinery guards. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1940, No. 3599. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1939. [Class 80 (iv) ] A safety device for presses and the like comprises a starting treadle 22, a reciprocating presser member 12 carrying a guard 28 capable of swinging horizontally, and means actuated by the horizontal movement of the guard for locking the treadle in inoperative position, the locking means being constructed to prevent opening of the guard while the treadle is depressed. As shown, for a heel compressing machine described in Specification 22839/02, [Class 17], the guard 28 is mounted adjustably on an arm 34 splined to a rod 38. Part of the arm 34 lies between a forked bracket 36 fastened to the reciprocating crosshead 12 of the machine. The rod 38 is held against vertical movement by collars 53 engaging a fixed bracket 50 and it has a hook 54 at its lower end. The treadle 22 is urged towards its uppermost position by a spring 56. When the guard 28 is in the guarding position the treadle may be depressed and released freely. When the treadle is in the raised position a locking pin 44 on the arm 34 may be released from the bracket 36 and the guard 28 may then be swung outwardly. The hook 54 will move under the treadle 22 which will then be prevented from being depressed. The guard 28 cannot be opened while the treadle is depressed as the hook 54 will engage and be prevented from turning by a lug plate 58 on the treadle 22,
