Abstract

538,060. Lactates ; lactic acid. MULLER, J. Jan. 15, 1940, No. 875. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Alkaline earth lactates are purified by dissolving in boiling strong ethyl, propyl or isopropyl alcohol, filtering and cooling to effect crystallization. The alcohol preferably contains 15-5 per cent. of water. The solution may be agitated while cooling to control the size of the crystals. When the lactate is produced by the fermentation of a mash in the presence of, for instance, calcium carbonate, alcohol of 95 per cent. (which may contain a denaturant such as 15 per cent. of acetone) is added to precipitate the lactate which is then purified by dissolving in boiling alcohol and crystallizing one or more times. Alternatively, the mash may be concentrated before treatment with the alcohol, or it may be evaporated to dryness and boiled with alcohol preferably of 80 per cent. strength with agitation, the solution being filtered and cooled for crystallization, further crystallizations being effected as before for purification. Lactic acid may be prepared from the purified lactate or from the alcoholic solution before crystallization, for instance by treatment with sulphuric acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to the use of the alcohols specified, and mentions methyl alcohol as suitable. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
